Many universal coefficient theorems appearing in Nature can be (re)formulated in terms of a homological functor H on a triangulated category T, where moreover H is the restricted Yoneda functor on some small and nice full subcategory C of T. A natural and interesting question is then how to recognize which subcategories C are "sufficiently nice" so as to give rise to a universal coefficient theorem. This soon leads to questions of Gorenstein homological algebra. We will present in detail some examples of this phenomenon, including a couple of new ones. (This is joint work with Greg Stevenson and Jan Stovicek.)
