After recalling some old results on the eikonal approach to trasplanckian-energy collisions of light particles and strings I will turn to recent applications of the same techniques, mutatis mutandis, to black-hole encounters. I will emphasize throughout a few puzzles that have arisen -and only partially been solved- in both regimes.
