Hyperbolic groups, Mapping Class Groups, Teichmüller spaces with the Teichmüller or Weil–Petersson metric and fundamental groups of non-geometric 3-manifolds are all examples of hierarchically hyperbolic spaces and groups. I will describe the main properties of hierarchically hyperbolic spaces and present a result about their asymptotic dimension that implies that the asymptotic dimension of the Mapping Class Group of a closed surface is at most quadratic in the genus. Joint work with Jason Behrstock and Mark Hagen.
