During flow, yield stress fluids accumulate internal stresses that are stored and gradually released over extremely long time scales. This storage and release of internal stresses give rise to intriguing phenomena such as directional memory (the Bauschinger effect) and aging. By combining rheological experiments with numerical simulations, we rationalize the connection between microscopic internal stresses and macroscopic mechanical properties, and we develop a simple mechanical protocol to control both memory and aging.

Dr. Paolo Edera got his PhD in Physics at the University of Milan, where he specialized in experimental soft matter physics. He has worked as a postdoc researcher in the university of Milan, at the FORT institute for technology in Heraklion (Grece), and th ESPCI Paris, where he is now permanent CNRS researcher. His research concerns the nonlinear rheology of soft materials (yielding, memory effects, and aging), the development of vitrimers with enhanced reshaping capabilities, and the advancement of experimental techniques in quantitative optical microscopy and rheology.
