cording to Market Scope the three largest markets for High Power Lasers are sheet metal processing, photolithography and ophthalmology with a total revenue for the manufacturers of the laser beam sources in excess of 1 bn annually.
We will examine these three applications of high power lasers in detail and give an overview of the lasers used in the different fields. Sheet metal processing divides into cutting and welding. The flat sheet cutting market alone is 4bn € annually for the equipment makers. Laser welding is standard procedure for most modern car body assembly lines. In photolithography Excimer lasers have replaced Xe lamps as the major light source over the last decade. Soon we will see a new area with the advent of 13,5nm photolithography. Here the laser will not be the light source anymore, but the plasma that is providing the radiation can be produced by a laser (LPP). In ophthalmology LASIK is an established procedure since more than a decade. However, recently new femtosecond laser based procedures in cornea as well as in the lens gain market share. All three fields of application are dominated by gas (CO2 and Excimer) and diode pumped solid state lasers (fiber, disc and bulk crystal). We will present the different types of lasers used.
