Abstract:
The Leman-Baikal project constitutes an international Swiss-Russian collaborative research initiative in the field of physical limnology. The three-year framework involves a series of environmental studies on lakes Geneva and Baikal (Southern Siberia, Russia) that invoke - among other methods - airborne hyperspectral imaging of land and water surfaces from an ultralight aircraft. A unique and novel remote sensing equipment was developed specifically for the project by the team of the TOPO laboratory. In this talk we present the challenges and the achievements of the field campaign that took place on lake Baikal during the months July and August of 2014 against the magnificent and culturally charged backdrop of the Siberian landscape.
Short biography:
Yosef Akhtman received his BSc degree in Physics and Mathematics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel in 2000, and a PhD in Electronic Engineering from the University of Southampton, UK, in 2007. He held a number of research positions spanning the subjects of information theory, mobile robotics and remote sensing of environment. In 2011, he has joined the Geodetic Engineering Laboratory (TOPO) at EPFL, where his current research is focused on the development of airborne hyperspectral imaging sensors.
