What is the bending rigidity of a book? Properties of stacks result from the interplay between the inter-layer interactions and the mechanical properties of the individual layers. In this talk, we discuss the particular case of a stack of elastic plates interacting through friction. Using bending experiments, we decipher the observed mechanical response by elucidating the roles of elasticity, geometrical non-linearities, and friction.
