Abstract:
For many low-density heterogeneous structures, conventional X-ray absorption imaging is unable to detect microscopic details such as defects or interfaces. This talk will focus on X-Ray phase contrast imaging, an interferometric imaging technique which can overcome some of these limitations. Such analyses are now available at EPFL’s Laboratory for Processing of Advanced Composites through its recently acquired system, Evita. We will also see how this technique can help bringing insights to studies in various fields such as mechanics, materials science or biology.

Bio:
After degrees in physics and materials science at the university of Nice, France, Valentin obtained a PhD from the University of Caen Normandie in 2021. His PhD work focused mainly on modeling the dynamics of capillary flows in porous media for the processing of composite materials. Valentin joined EPFL in 2021 and is now working in prof. Véronique Michaud’s Laboratory for Processing of Advanced Composites (LPAC). His current research mainly focuses on developing magnetic composites for linear actuators, and using X-Ray phase contrast imaging for the analysis of heterogeneous and low-density structures.
