Microwave diagnostic is based on the dielectric contrast existing between different tissues, or between similar tissues in different conditions, such as normal or pathological for instance. From the contrast point of view, microwaves offer attractive potentials as compared to competing imaging modalities such as MRI, X-ray tomography, Ultrasound echo-tomography, etc. However, spatial resolution suffers from complex scattering mechanisms and requires some optimization according to the desired depth of investigation. Specific difficulties in retrieving the dielectric contrast inside human tissues from scattered field data will be pointed out.
