Despite decades of research, the cellular and molecular processes by which sleep maintains normal brain function as well as the mechanisms involved in sleep homeostasis remain elusive. Using Drosophila molecular genetics and a learning assay sensitive to sleep loss, we have uncovered a role for the receptor Notch in sleep homeostasis and learning. Together these results identify a novel neuronal-glia signalling pathway dependent on Notch and highlight the emerging role of glia in regulating both sleep and learning impairments associated with sleep loss.
