We will first review the theory of arithmetic manifolds (the main method to construct hyperbolic manifolds in arbitrary dimensions) and briefly explain Gromov and Piatetski-Shapiro's interbreeding construction of non-arithmetic manifolds. We will then define the trace field, state some of its properties and explain how it can be used to detect if a manifold is non-arithmetic.
