The field of “social practice theory” has provided a powerful analytical framework for sociology and has highlighted how everyday practice shapes and is shaped both by social structures and by an understanding of those structures, and is routinized in bodily and mental activities and in emotions. Integral to theories of social practice is the idea of social reflexivity, which “…offers some of the most efficacious means of attaining the freedom from social determinisms which is possible only through knowledge of those very determinisms” (Bourdieu, 1998: ix).
