According to the standard postulates of Quantum Theory, if A is an observable with eigenvalues a_i, a basis of corresponding eigenstates | i >, and if | \Psi > is the state of the system, then the probability distribution for measuring the eigenvalues is p_i = | < \Psi | i > |^2.
In this talk, I describe recent joint work with C J Fewster on the probability distribution of the smeared (averaged) stress tensor in chiral conformal field theory which has developed general methods to compute such distributions for various preferred choices of the state (vacuum, thermal, highest weight) and obtained concrete probability distributions for several families of smearing functions
