This talk will be about the moduli space M_g of closed hyperbolic surfaces of given genus g. This space can be thought of as a deformation space and different measures of deformations can be used to endow M_g with different geometries. Although there exists a rich theory describing the geometry of moduli space, surprisingly little is understood about qualities that might be described as aspects of its “shape” when equipped with one of its natural metrics. An intriguing subspace of M_g is given by the subset consisting of surfaces whose systoles fill the surface (a systole is a shortest closed geodesic). In this talk I'll describe a first attempt at trying to understand the shape of surfaces whose systoles fill by comparing it to other natural subsets of M_g (where M_g is endowed with either the so-called Thurston or Teichmüller metrics). This is joint work with J. Anderson and A. Pettet.
