We have recently developed a novel concept of studying intestinal bacterial-host interaction – a reversible intestinal bacterial colonization system (Hapfelmeier et al. Science (2010) 328 pp. 1705-9). Germ free animals can be exposed to live commensal bacteria that do not multiply in the host, which thus becomes germ-free again. The ensuing immune response can be studied in the again germ-free animal, and thus be uncoupled from bacterial colonization. This allows to study immune dynamics, immune memory and other responses to intestinal bacteria in ways that were previously not possible.
