After introducing mapping class groups of surfaces and describing some of their properties, we will discuss a number of rigidity results for homomorphisms between mapping class groups. In particular, we will discuss the complete classification of all homomorphisms between two mapping class groups, subject to certain conditions on the topology of the corresponding surfaces.
