The growing number of people on the planet, coupled with globalization and urbanization, has greatly increased the risks to society, to the international community as a whole including the private sector. The impact of disasters is increasingly frightening. Climate change and land degradation will aggravate the situation. To cope with all these risks (like natural hazards, technical and biological risks, pandemics, terrorism, etc.) new frameworks, principles and strategies, mechanisms and methods have to be found. The more complex the risk landscape gets, the more necessary a collaborative global risk reward management process becomes. The presentation will focus on some of the today's most pressing risk patterns, highlight some strategies on how to cope with these risks and disasters and give some advice on current research needs.
