The road network of many countries suffers from severe lack of capacity, and need to be significantly enhanced in the near future. This is, in particular, the case of Brazil, China, and India, the current engines of the world economy. The road network planning solutions to implement will certainly attend to economic objectives, but should also take into account social and environmental concerns, as key ingredients of a sustainable development policy. In this presentation, we analyze how the consideration of these concerns will affect road network planning solutions using a multi-objective optimization model. The type of results that can be obtained through the analysis are exemplified for the State of Paraná, Brazil.
