"Immigrant Entrepreneurs: Country of Origin and Host Country Experience"

Abstract
Immigrants are widespread all over the world, and they have a relatively high propensity to become engaged in entrepreneurship. In this presentation, we document the prevalence of entrepreneurship among immigrants in Portugal.  Defining entrepreneurships as new firms with paid employees, we document the extent to which immigrants engage in entrepreneurship as their first occupation in the labor market, the extent to which they switch from paid employment into entrepreneurship, and the extent to which their firms survive over time.  We compare these patterns with similar patterns for locals and among immigrants from different countries. Europe is the continent that is the largest destiny of migrants. Portugal is a country whose income per capita is below the median the Europe and has large numbers of immigrants both from countries which have both and lower and higher income per capita. Our evidence shows that both country of origin and the extent of experience in the host country greatly affect the extent of entrepreneurial activities of immigrants.
