Abstract: This talk discusses some recent company research and development activities in the domain of autonomous driving and advanced control. A virtual validation and testing framework for autonomous driving (AD) planning and control development is also presented. One of the main challenges in AD development is validating the planning and control algorithms in a closed-loop fashion, where both vehicle dynamics characteristics and a wide variety of traffic scenarios are taken into account. The designs should also guarantee optimal performance toward precise trajectory tracking, and time/fuel optimality with respect to various constraints. This presentation discusses co-simulation based approaches to frontload control design verification during the early phases of system development. The approach is demonstrated with different driving use cases.

Bio: Dr. Son Tong obtained his PhD (as part of a Marie Curie fellowship) with Prof. Jan Swevers and Prof. Goele Pipeleers from KULeuven, Belgium, in 2016. In the PhD project, he developed several iterative learning control (ILC)  methodologies to deal with robustness and multi-objective designs using optimization. Since then he is a senior researcher in Siemens Industry Software, doing research and managing several autonomous driving, ADAS and control related projects.
