Recent years have seen remarkable relations between
gauge boson and graviton scattering amplitudes. I discuss the
similarities and differences of the soft and collinear limit
of non-abelian gauge theory vs perturbative quantum gravity
from the perspective of effective Lagrangians beyond the leading
power in the respective limits. The role of "emergent" gauge
symmetries is emphasized, which provides an explanation why
there is a universal next-to-next-to-soft term in gravity
but not in gauge theories.
