Presentation of the mission and the academic structure of the the Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research, one of the research institutes of the Ben Gurion University of the Negev. The activities of the various research groups (desert ecology, architecture and social studies, solar energy and environmental physics, irrigated and rain fed dryland agriculture , aquaculture, plant stress physiology, desalination, wastewater treatment and geohydrology.) will be presented and some projects will be presented in greater detail, amongst them: 1. Efficient use of flood water for the production of olives and the simultaneous production of firewood and fodder 2. Polyethylene mulching to improve water use efficiency of irrigated crops 3. Urban canyon microclimate and pedestrian comfort 4. Remote sensing for desertification studies 5. Gaseous environment of rodent burrows'
