Speaker | Dr Luis Filipe Carvalho da Costa is an engineer turned researcher. He graduated with a Diploma degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (Portugal) in 2006 and received his PhD from the University of Greifswald in 2013. Currently working at the the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, he has led climate impact and adaptation studies for European research projects and the German Ministry of Environment. Failing to address the role of societal change will make reaching the targets set in the Paris Agreement more difficult. Preliminary results of the EU Calculator model indicate that changes in individual behavior have comparable greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction potential to those from ambitious technological deployment in transport and agriculture. In both cases, the reductions in GHG come associated with important tradeoffs regarding investment costs, biodiversity, water and - perhaps more importantly for the ongoing debate - time. The presentation will introduce the EUCalculator model and other outcomes of the EUcalc project.
