THE EXTRACTION OF VALUE
MEASURE, MATERIALS AND CRAFT

25.11.2026 – 03.04.2027
Opening Tuesday 24 November 2026 6.30pm

From design to construction, where does the true ingenuity of building construction lie? The Extraction of Value shifts the focus of architectural knowledge towards the tools that measure, mark out and align a building during its construction. Over 300 historical instruments, collected over several decades and from various regions of the world by the architect Paolo Tombesi, form the core of this exhibition. Spirit levels, gauges, templates, graduated rulers and plumb lines are presented as veritable repositories of technical knowledge, with each tool symbolising choices relating to precision, distribution and the nature of the work.

To showcase this collection, Archizoom has joined forces with USM, whose furniture – based on a rigorous grid system, precise assembly and flawless regularity – provides the ideal setting for an exhibition dedicated to the sense of measurement.

An exhibition organised in collaboration with Prof. Paolo Tombesi and Jacob Schlüssel, from the FAR Construction and Architecture Laboratory at EPFL
