The 'texture of places' will look at architecture at the scale of the house and at that of the city, reflecting upon the inter-relationship that these disciplines of work have between each other.
In a period when many European cities are considering issues of urban density, questions about housing and its role in the formation of the city is at a critical moment. Considering the mainly normative programmes that make up the body of the city - the places we reside for home and work – this talk will address a range of issues to which architecture is instrumental in affecting: our communities, well being, social relationships and the emotional reactions to the physical things we make and the spatial configurations we set up as architects.
Cities are made from many small things and I like to think about architecture as 'gift to the city' with consideration for what buildings can do for our urban spaces and how they can augment the public realm. With equal measure, concern will focus upon strategic urban thinking as well as details and the material construction that imparts our experience of place: the pieces of buildings we touch, lean upon and pass through.
