In this talk we discuss classical and more recent characterizations of abstract stable homotopy theories. Since spectra are obtained by stabilizing (pointed) spaces, every such characterization describes defining features of the passage from (pointed) spaces to spectra. A characterization in terms of weighted (co)limits opens the door for more abstract stabilizations, and this is the starting point for an on-going project with Mike Shulman.
