Inaugural Lecture: The progressive penetration of conventional and renewable electrical generation into power distribution systems is driving major changes in the whole power systems infrastructure. In particular, the main involved aspects are the active and optimal control of distributed generation, the networks real-time monitoring, the definition, development and deployment of massive storage technologies, the definition of new protections schemes to maximize power systems reliability (especially at the distribution level) as well as the demand side management and active customer integration. Within this context, the lecture focuses on the progresses of modern electric power networks and provides the description of some of the most recent advancements in the area of real-time network monitoring and its real-time operation.
