Within the next few years, supercomputing will reach the exascale, enabling simulations of complex physical processes in fusion plasmas with unprecedented realism. This will constitute a major step towards theory-driven fusion research, ultimately leading to optimized device designs and operating regimes. These developments will be illustrated by some recent achievements and emerging new opportunities at the intersection of experimental and theoretical plasma physics, applied mathematics, and computer science.
