Abstract We study the drainage dynamics of highly viscous liquid cylinders hanging from their upper base. When the liquid does not contain any solid fiber, the drainage flow is mostly resisted by extensional viscous dissipation and exhibits a pinch-off at a finite time. Focusing on dimensions larger than the capillary length, surface tension is completely negligible, and the dynamics is captured by balancing gravity and viscosity. Conversely, a liquid cylinder containing an inner long fiber along its axis exhibits a much slower dynamics, as the viscous dissipation becomes dominated by shear dissipation. In order to connect these two different regimes, suspensions containing a finite amount of rigid fibers are used. The pinch-off time can be controlled by tuning the initial disposition of these fibers. Experimental and numerical results will be presented, supported by analytical models.

Bio Ludovic Keiser did his Ph.D. at ESPCI Paris under the supervision of Etienne Reyssat and José Bico, working on interfacial instabilities and confined droplets dynamics. In 2018, he joined the Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics and Instabilities (LFMI) as a postdoctoral researcher, supervised by François Gallaire.
