Engineering and Design projects often have multiple different criteria which need to be met (different functionalities which trade off against each other, cost requirements, sustainability concerns, ethical issues, legal rights to use intellectual property…). This means that it is usually not possible to choose a perfect solution, only an optimal solution. Within a team, different people may have different ideas which can lead to tensions. So what methods can you use to find optimal solutions in ways that reduce the risk of conflicts? This is the goal of multi-criteria decision making tools.
