Applied mathematics is becoming increasingly important in industry. The performance of today’s computer and embedded systems allows the implementation of mathematical operations for a variety of different purposes, like control, estimation, speech/image processing, big data processing in logistics, classification, decision making, etc. Zumbach Electronic, a typical Swiss SME, has recognized that applied mathematics is becoming increasingly important also for SMEs. In this talk it will be shown how online numerical optimization is used to estimate the geometric quantities of high-voltage cables in an X-ray measurement system. A brief sketch of the various mathematical challenges will be given from the modeling of the measurement device and of the measurement object, through the estimation algorithm, the process non-idealities and their impact on the estimation algorithm, to the algorithm management (initialization, exception handling, etc.).
