Title:
Waste no more: past and future SXL contributions for the built environment.
Abstract
More and more buildings are being demolished even though their components are in excellent physical condition. Urban mining and reusing them to transform the built environment is a circular strategy with unprecedented environmental benefits, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, waste, and material extraction. While the approach has not yet reached its full industrial potential, it redefines designers’ workflows and calls for new computational methods and construction processes. In this talk, Corentin Fivet will review recent research outputs and teaching activities from the Structural Xploration Lab, EPFL, related to reusing obsolete pieces in new building structures. Reflecting on the DNA that makes SXL what it is today, he will also attempt to characterise future academic opportunities, pitfalls, and ethical responsibilities for the SXL and the like, beyond current foci on material circularity.
About the speaker
Corentin Fivet is Associate Professor of Architecture and Structural Design at EPFL in Switzerland, where he heads the Structural Xploration Lab. Based in the Smart Living Lab in Fribourg, his research focuses mainly on creating design methods to facilitate the reuse of load-bearing elements in buildings, contributing to a more sustainable, circular economy. Before joining EPFL, Corentin Fivet was a researcher and teacher at MIT, Boston, for two years. He holds a PhD from UcLouvain, Belgium. He is the author of numerous scientific publications, is regularly invited to give lectures in Switzerland and abroad, and has received several awards for his academic work.
