But what happens when theories and conceptual frameworks are de-contextualised and used for purposes other than those originally intended? Through this call for proposals, the Foundation supports research on such “dual use” effects and explores how the transfer of ideas from academia into political and ideological contexts takes place.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nResearch on the following topics is eligible for funding:\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The occurrence, nature and manifestations of a specific ‘dual use’ of concepts and theories in the humanities and social sciences, which differs from deliberate disinformation or merely a simplified reception. What are its characteristic practices?</li>\r\n\t<li>Characteristics of theories and concepts in the humanities and social sciences that facilitate their ideologically motivated repurposing. What might a reception-sensitive approach to theory-building look like without restricting the freedom of research and teaching?</li>\r\n\t<li>Pathways of transfer and networks of actors through which ideas from the humanities and social sciences move from academic contexts into political, ideological or digital public spheres.</li>\r\n\t<li>Conditions under which such reinterpretations have a particular impact – for example, in the interplay of academic debates, media dynamics and political interests.</li>\r\n\t<li>Consequences arising from this for science communication in the humanities and social sciences. How can complex or critical concepts be communicated without them being easily oversimplified, misunderstood or ideologically exploited in public debates?</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n<br>\r\nFunding is available for (interdisciplinary) project teams from the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences, consisting of two to three researchers (one PI and up to two Co-PIs).<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Funding</strong>: up to EUR 650K<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Duration</strong>: max. 2 years<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Eligibility:</strong> The call for proposals is aimed at researchers with a PhD who are employed at German universities and research institutions. Researchers with a PhD <strong>from international research institutions may participate as Co-PIs.</strong><br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>How to Apply</strong>: Applicants must submit their application through the <a href=\"https://portal.volkswagenstiftung.de/\">online platform</a>. Applications should include a project description, expenditure plan, and CVs for all PIs. We leverage optogenetics, mechanical perturbations, and modeling to reveal a mechanochemical long-range mutual activation between front and back polarity programs that complements their known local mutual inhibition. Rac-driven protrusions increase membrane tension, triggering mTORC2-dependent Rho activation at the opposite side of the cell. Conversely, Rho-mediated contractility induces cortical-flow regulation of phosphoinositide signaling, promoting distal Rac activation. Our findings demonstrate how the actin cortex and plasma membrane interact as an integrated mechanochemical system for long-range Rac-Rho patterning. Efficient migration also requires polarized organization of the cell interior, with organelle positioning increasingly recognized as a key determinant of cell movement. Yet how this organization is established remains unclear. I will discuss two discoveries that reveal how lysosomes solve these complementary challenges and how their failure creates disease vulnerabilities. First, I will describe Lysosomal Leucine Aminopeptidase (LyLAP), an enzyme specialized to processively degrade the hydrophobic α-helices of transmembrane proteins. LyLAP is highly expressed in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, where its loss causes hydrophobic peptides to accumulate, compromises lysosomal function, and ultimately leads to cancer cell death, revealing a potential vulnerability in tumors with elevated endocytic activity. I will then describe LASER, a damage-responsive protein assembly that couples lysosomal membrane injury to repair. At its core, the oligomeric protein TFG recognizes LC3/GABARAP proteins conjugated to damaged lysosomes and recruits the ESCRT machinery to restore membrane integrity. Neurodegenerative disease-associated mutations in TFG disrupt this process, linking defective lysosomal repair to human disease. These singularities generate cusps that limit the global regularity of the wave function in spectral Barron spaces, which are particularly relevant to the analysis of Fourier-based approximation methods and neural networks.<br>\r\nIn this talk, we study the effect of extracting a truncated Jastrow factor designed to capture the leading coalescence singularities while preserving the asymptotic behavior of the wave function at infinity. We show that the resulting quotient gains one full order of spectral Barron regularity: whereas the original wave function typically belongs to spaces of order (s<1), the Jastrow quotient belongs to those of order (s<2). An explicit hydrogenic example shows that the threshold (s=2) is natural.<br>\r\nThe proof relies on conjugating the Hamiltonian by the Jastrow factor and carrying out a global Fourier-space analysis. Many real-world missions, however, require satisfying logical precedence constraints: collecting resources before accessing restricted zones, completing subtasks in a prescribed order, or acquiring tools before they can be used. This talk presents the augmented graph of convex sets (augmented GCS) framework, which unifies continuous trajectory optimization and combinatorial task sequencing within a single optimization problem.<br>\r\nThe key insight is that a layered augmented GCS, built on an exact convex partition of the free space, simultaneously selects an optimal task completion sequence and computes an optimal continuous trajectory. A shortest path in the augmented GCS solves both problems at once, yielding an exact solution up to a finite Bézier curve parameterization. The layered structure of the augmented GCS turns out to implement precisely the Bellman-Held-Karp (BHK) dynamic programming algorithm for the Traveling Salesman Problem, establishing a formal correspondence between our framework and the combinatorial TSP literature. This makes augmented GCS a continuous-geometry generalization of BHK, achieving the same singly exponential worst-case complexity, an exponential improvement over general-purpose temporal logic tools. We further develop a library of mission specification variations (including ordered collection, disjunctive keys, conjunctive doors, timed constraints, and conditional logic) each with proven correctness, substantially expanding the range of expressible mission types. Numerical experiments confirm exponential speedups in practice and near-global-optimality on a large benchmark suite.<br>\r\nTime permitting, I will briefly discuss ongoing extensions, including spacetime augmented GCS for dynamic environments, safety-aware planning via conformal prediction sets, and a galactic survey benchmark inspired by space mission planning that stress-tests the framework at scale.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Biography: </strong>Tyler Summers is an associate professor at the University of Texas at Dallas. Prior to joining UT Dallas, he was an ETH Postdoctoral Fellow at the Automatic Control Laboratory at ETH Zurich from 2011 to 2015. He received a PhD degree in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin in 2010. He was a Fulbright Postgraduate Scholar at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia in 2007-2008. He received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2021 and a Young Investigator Program award from the US Army Research Office in 2017.
