Yet behind this flexibility lies a fundamental tension: operational decisions that appear beneficial in the present can deteriorate the future state of the system. This talk explores these temporal frictions in assigned on-demand systems—where passengers and vehicles are matched before meeting—and how they shape the performance and reliability of shared mobility services.
\r\nFirst, we show how assignment decisions evolve through what we term the Increasing Gap Dynamics, a negative feedback cycle through which vehicles progressively concentrate in space, reducing system efficiency over time. We then examine how a tension between efficiency and reliability emerges: while highly dynamic operations can improve short-term efficiency and flexibility, they may also increase unreliability by exposing passengers to future, uncertain requests. We discuss how this tension manifests both in routing decisions and in the selection of pickup and dropoff locations, and show how carefully designed anticipatory techniques can help reconcile these competing objectives.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nSHORT BIO
\r\nDr Andrés Fielbaum is a Senior Lecturer in Transport Engineering at the University of Sydney and a DECRA Fellow of the Australian Research Council.
\r\nDr. Beat Frey, Dr. Joel Rüthi, Dr. Ivano Brunner, Beat Stierli
\r\n
\r\nEléments biographiques
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n>>> Site web de l'artiste Rahel Oberhummer
\r\n
\r\nVernissage le jeudi 7 mai 2026 à 18 :30
\r\nExposition visible jusqu’au 11 octobre 2026
\r\nHall du RLC / entrée libre
\r\n
\r\nImage : Dioszegia patagonica 001, Pochonia/Metacordyceps chlamydosporia 205, Pseudogymnoascus pannorum 511, Potato Dextrose Agar with sepia ink, 2022.
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-16T17:17:43", "last_modification_date": "2026-05-26T15:56:40", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "Hall du Rolex Learning Center", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==RLC%20G1%2094.12", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [], "speaker": "Rahel Oberhummer, artiste", "organizer": "Pôle Culture EPFL", "contact": "Véronique Mauron Layaz", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120096/", "category": { "id": 5, "code": "EXPO", "fr_label": "Expositions", "en_label": "Exhibitions", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/22/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71697, "title": "ENAC Research Day 2026", "slug": "enac-research-day-2026", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/enac-research-day-2026", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33025/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33025/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33025/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-06-11", "end_date": "2026-06-11", "start_time": "14:00:00", "end_time": "18:00:00", "description": "
Join us for this year’s Research Day, featuring four inspiring keynote speakers and ENAC young researchers presenting their latest projects during a lively poster session.
\r\n
\r\nProgram\r\n

\r\n
\r\n
\r\n\t
14h00 Prof. Katrin Beyer, Dean
\r\n\tIntroduction and Welcome
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
14h10-15h10 Keynote Lectures\r\n\t
\r\n\t\t
14h10-14h30: Prof. Eric Lapierre
\r\n\t\t
14h35-14h50: Dr. Savvas Saloustros
\r\n\t\t
14h55-15h10: Dr. Aurélie Terrier
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
15h15-15h40 Poster awards IA, IIC, IIE
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
15h40-16h40: Poster session & Discussion
\r\n\tIn the Hall SG Dashboard impact IT4R Drinks and Coffee
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
16h45-17h55 Keynote Lectures\r\n\t
\r\n\t\t
16h45-17h05: Prof. Michel Bierlaire
\r\n\t\t
17h10-17h30: Prof. Priya Ramakrishna
\r\n\t\t
17h35-17h55: Prof. Tom Battin
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
18h00 Prof. Katrin Beyer, Dean
\r\n\tClosure of the Research Day
\r\n
\r\nApero at Piano
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-04-24T11:06:44", "last_modification_date": "2026-06-09T14:21:56", "link_label": "Inscription", "link_url": "https://forms.gle/RtP5ziHGt9dG3aJt9", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "Hall SG", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%20094.11", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "", "organizer": "ENAC Faculty", "contact": "[email protected]", "is_internal": "True", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Sur inscription", "en_label": "Registration required" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120514/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Clinical reasoning exemplifies the latter: physicians generate hypotheses abductively, revise beliefs probabilistically as evidence accumulates, and choose among actions whose costs are deeply asymmetric. The harm of a missed diagnosis is not the harm of an unnecessary test. Large language models, increasingly deployed for clinical decision support, inherit this limitation. They conflate knowledge with inference: the same parameters that store medical facts are asked to reason over them, which leaves no explicit mechanism to quantify uncertainty, to abstain when evidence is insufficient, or to weight outcomes by their true clinical costs. This work argues that progress toward trustworthy medical AI requires separating the representation of knowledge from the machinery of inference, and grounding the latter in formal frameworks drawn from statistical decision theory. We investigate how these frameworks can be embedded into LLM reasoning pipelines and imposed as external scaffolding around them, maintaining competing hypotheses, guiding evidence gathering, and selecting actions that reflect the asymmetric cost structure of clinical practice. The goal is a class of systems capable of reasoning over their uncertainty, systems that know when they do not know.
\r\n
\r\nSelected papers
\r\ncoming soon", "image_description": "Reasoning Under Uncertainty: Trustworthy LLMs for High-Stakes Medicine", "creation_date": "2026-04-29T09:21:38", "last_modification_date": "2026-04-29T09:21:38", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "INF 326", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==INF%20326", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [], "speaker": "Yusuf Kesmen", "organizer": "", "contact": "[email protected]", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "EDIC candidacy exam", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120579/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/27/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/48/?format=api" ] } ] }
