Janelidze, L. Márki and W. Tholen in 2002, generalizes that of abelian category, and captures the homological properties that the categories of groups, associative algebras, Lie algebras and cocommutative Hopf algebras over a field have in common. Internal structures behave surprisingly well in semi-abelian categories. For example, any internal reflexive graph admits at most one internal category structure, and the categories of internal categories and internal groupoids are isomorphic. Moreover, the category of internal groupoids is equivalent to the category of internal crossed modules. The notion of internal crossed module in any semi-abelian category was introduced by G. Janelidze in 2003, and recovers in particular the classical notion of crossed module of groups. The fact that the category of internal groupoids in a semi-abelian category is itself semi-abelian implies that also the category of internal n-fold groupoids is well-behaved.<br>\r\n <br>\r\nIn this talk, I will prove that the full subcategory of internal n-groupoids in a semi-abelian category is a Birkhoff subcategory of the category of internal n-fold groupoids, and provide a simple description of the corresponding reflection for n=2. In the abelian context, the internal n-groupoids yield a torsion-free subcategory of the category of internal n-fold groupoids, and it is possible to characterize (higher) central extensions and compute generalized Hopf formulae for homology. <br>\r\n <br>\r\nPart of this talk is based on joint work with Marino Gran<br>\r\n </p>", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-03-25T12:18:18", "last_modification_date": "2026-03-25T12:25:27", "link_label": "", "link_url": "", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "MA B1 504", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==MA%20B1%20504", "url_online_room": "", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Nadja Egner, UC Louvain", "organizer": "Markus Kirolos", "contact": "Maroussia Schaffner", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/120179/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/5/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/7/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 71499, "title": "IMX Talks - Value-added utilization of biomass and CO2 for sustainable aviation fuels and biomaterials", "slug": "imx-talks-value-added-utilization-of-biomass-and-2", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/imx-talks-value-added-utilization-of-biomass-and-2", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32841/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32841/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/32841/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-04-16", "end_date": "2026-04-16", "start_time": "15:30:00", "end_time": "16:15:00", "description": "<p>The conversion of low-carbon resources such as biomass and CO2 into synthetic liquid fuels, value-added chemicals, and biomaterials is a crucial approach for global carbon emission reduction. In this context, this talk will focus on recent research advances on biomass and CO2 conversion to sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), chemicals and bio-based materials. Considering the challenges associated with low-carbon resources, including dispersed distribution, significant fluctuations in raw material composition, and high conversion costs, a distributed-centralized system utilizing alcohols as key platform molecules has been proposed. Alcohol synthesis from biomass and CO2 will be presented with the focus on catalysis for methanol (thermocatalysis) and ethanol synthesis (electrocatalysis) from CO2. Conversion of alcohol to SAF will be introduced with discussions on the design of multifunctional catalysts for alcohol conversion, the dynamic evolution of catalytic sites, and the strategies for tuning product distributions. Additionally, a few examples of biobased materials, such as cellulose nanofiber-based biomaterials and bio-based nylon precursor and polyester precursor, will be presented.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nBio: Dr. Zhenglong Li is the “Qiushi” Chair Professor of Zhejiang University. This presentation will focus on the development of fully bio-based polycarbonates, synthesized through the polymerization of carbon dioxide with renewable epoxides. We will first detail our laboratory’s work in generating a diverse portfolio monomer from a wide range of bio-feedstocks including plant oils, terpenes, lignocellulosic biomass, and industrial byproducts. Another focus is the effect of monomer structure on resulting polymer properties and performance, and how post-polymerization modification strategies can be employed to tailor materials for specific applications. (2) Applications of bio-based polycarbonates will be then discussed in fields such as coatings, biomedical materials, adhesives, and their recycling pathways. (3) An outline of future directions will be explored, emphasizing the roles of advanced catalyst design, AI-driven manufacturing, and supportive policy frameworks to enable scalable and sustainable production. The integration of CO2 utilization with renewable feedstocks presents a compelling route toward circular and carbon–neutral materials.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nBio: Shaoqing Cui, Ph.D., is a Principal Investigator under the Zhejiang University’s \"Hundred Talents Program\" and a recipient of China’s National High-level Talent Program - (Overseas Young Talent Project). Ion channels exert their biological roles through three main functional characteristics: the highly efficient selective conduction of ions; the capacity to open and close in response to chemical/physical stimuli (gating); and the decrease in conductance upon sustained stimuli (inactivation). In the last 20 years, the number of experimental atomic structures of ion channels has increased from a few units to hundreds, now including representative structures for most of the ion channel families. Simulations based on these experimental structures have significantly contributed to the current understanding of conduction, selectivity, gating, and inactivation [1-2]. Strengthening the quantitative agreement between simulations and experiments is now essential for advancing in this field. This effort is currently hampered by common issues in biomolecular simulations, such as the limited timescales for observing biologically relevant events and the sub-optimal accuracy of the underlying physical models. Both of these shortcomings are expected to be mitigated by recent methodological developments. For instance, atomic simulations of ion channels with polarizable force fields have been recently reported [3]. Lack of polarization is a well-known limitation of classical force fields, especially when describing ion-protein and ion-water interactions in a crowded environment like the pore cavity. Consequently, the usage of polarizable force fields is considered a promising strategy for improving the agreement with experimental data about ion conduction and selectivity. An alternative strategy for enhancing the model accuracy in critical channel regions is to combine molecular mechanics with quantum approaches. Thanks to the ever-increasing computational resources, now combined with advancements in codes for hybrid QM/MM models, this approach is becoming feasible for ion channel research [4]. Increasing computational resources, coupled with improved algorithms for accelerating rare events and potentially harnessing machine learning, are also opening new possibilities in the study of state transitions. Gating and inactivation events of ion channels are finally becoming accessible to atomic simulations, offering important insights into the mechanistic functioning of this important protein superfamily [5]. The proposed workshop will foster further developments in the field by bringing together leading scientists in the experimental methodologies and computational techniques used in ion channel research in a stimulating and collaborative environment.<br>\r\n <br>\r\n<strong>References</strong><br>\r\n<br>\r\n<a href=\"http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acs.chemrev.8b00630\" target=\"_blank\">[1] E. SERIES</strong></a> <em>(sandwiches provided)</em><br>\r\n<br>\r\n<u>Abstract:</u><br>\r\nNanobiosensors have long promised to move advanced diagnostics beyond centralized laboratories and into the hands of users, communities, and environments where they are most urgently needed. After decades of rapid progress in nanomaterials and sensing performance, the field now stands at a pivotal moment: the challenge is no longer whether we can detect with extraordinary sensitivity, but whether we can do so in ways that are sustainable, scalable, and globally accessible.<br>\r\nThis talk envisions a future in which point-of-care biosensing becomes an integral part of everyday life through the coupling of advanced nanomaterials with sustainable platforms. Paper-based substrates and environmentally friendly fabrication methods, such as inkjet printing and stamping, enable a new paradigm of decentralized manufacturing, one that supports rapid deployment during global health emergencies, continuous environmental monitoring, and personalized, wearable healthcare.<br>\r\nBy integrating biorecognition elements, including antibodies and nucleic-acid–based receptors such as DNA probes and aptamers with functional nanomaterials, including metallic nanoparticles, quantum dots, and two-dimensional materials, these biosensors achieve high sensitivity and specificity while remaining robust outside traditional laboratory settings. REASSURED-guided design, focusing on real-time connectivity, ease of use, affordability, sensitivity, specificity, rapid and user-friendly results, minimal equipment, and deliverability, ensures devices are intuitive, cost-effective, and provide actionable information in real time, often via visual or smartphone-based readouts.<br>\r\nSpanning applications from infectious disease surveillance and cancer diagnostics to neurodegenerative disease monitoring and water quality assessment, this work highlights a transformative shift: from isolated diagnostic tools to ubiquitous sensing ecosystems. Ultimately, sustainable nanobiosensors offer a pathway toward more resilient healthcare systems, empowered communities, and a future where access to critical information is no longer constrained by infrastructure or geography.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<u>Bio:</u><br>\r\nICREA Research Professor and leader of the ICN2 Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group, Arben Merkoçi obtained his PhD at the University of Tirana (Albania) working with in ion selective electrodes.
