The robot must perceive a ball travelling at high speed, estimate its position and spin, predict its trajectory, decide how to respond, and execute a precise motion, all while interacting with an intelligent and unpredictable opponent.
\r\nIn this talk, I will present Project ACE, an autonomous table tennis robot developed at Sony AI that progressed from learning basic racket skills to competing with elite human players. I will discuss the complete system behind this progression: high-speed visual perception, reinforcement learning, simulation, robot control, and the iterative sim-to-real process that enabled policies trained in simulation to perform on a real robot. Beyond table tennis, ACE provides a case study in what it takes to move from impressive robotic demonstrations to robust physical intelligence. I will share some of the lessons we learned about combining learning with control, using real-world failures to improve simulation, and designing AI systems that can adapt and act under the speed, uncertainty, and constraints of the physical world.
\r\n
\r\nBio
\r\nMireille El Gheche is a Lead Research Scientist at SoftBank Robotics, working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and robotics. Her expertise spans reinforcement learning, computer vision and perception, simulation, optimization, and real-world robotic systems, with a strong focus on translating research advances into robust physical systems.
\r\nPrior to joining SoftBank Robotics, Mireille was a Staff Research Scientist at Sony AI in Zurich, where she led research on Project ACE, an autonomous table tennis robot developed to compete with elite and professional human players. Before joining Sony AI, Mireille conducted academic research at EPFL and the University of Bordeaux, working across computer vision, and applied AI, including applications in medical AI. Her broader research interests lie in physical AI and intelligent robotic systems that can perceive, learn, adapt, and act in complex real-world environments.
\r\n ", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-09-23T10:33:38", "last_modification_date": "2026-10-05T11:59:06", "link_label": "Registration required", "link_url": "https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/HbwUm7bFrd", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SG 0213", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SG%200213", "url_online_room": "https://epfl.zoom.us/j/63790840787?pwd=OHuE2cuqmmbEZ5yeZiGhkDpQpZqjLx.1", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Dr. Mireille El Gheche", "organizer": "EPFL AI Center", "contact": "Nicolas Machado", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Tout public", "en_label": "General public" }, "registration": { "id": 1, "fr_label": "Sur inscription", "en_label": "Registration required" }, "keywords": "AI, Robotics", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121895/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/8/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/416/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/417/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 72764, "title": "IMX Talks - Resolving Hierarchical Structure with X-ray scattering imaging", "slug": "imx-talks-resolving-hierarchical-structure-with-x", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/imx-talks-resolving-hierarchical-structure-with-x", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33978/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33978/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33978/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-11-02", "end_date": "2026-11-02", "start_time": "16:30:00", "end_time": "17:30:00", "description": "
The function of many materials, from biological tissues to industrial polymers, depends on how their nanoscale building blocks are arranged and aligned within a macroscopic structure, which is essential to understand but difficult to resolve: established high-resolution techniques typically access only small sample volumes, limiting the ability to capture structural or biological variability across extended, heterogeneous samples.
\r\nSmall-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) imaging probes local nanostructure by raster-scanning a focused synchrotron beam across a sample. This can be extended to resolve nanostructure orientation voxel-by-voxel in three dimensions in a method called SAXS tensor tomography, which we implement in our open-source software package Mumott. In this presentation, I will show how this approach, and its continued development, can be applied across different material systems.
\r\nFor injection-molded polymer packaging, SAXS imaging has resolved the layered anisotropic nanostructure important for its mechanical properties, and, combined with industrial processing simulations, the structure formation during thermal processing. Another example is bone, where resolving structure requires both three-dimensional information and sufficient sampling to capture biological variability. Combining 2D and 3D SAXS imaging, we studied regional differences in the human femoral neck, an anatomical site relevant to hip fractures, and, at higher resolution, resolved alternating chirality between neighboring lamellae within individual osteons, a structural feature proposed on mechanical grounds over a century ago.
\r\nThese examples illustrate how tensor tomography, extended beyond X-ray scattering to wide-angle diffraction and visible-light polarimetry, provides a route to resolving hierarchical structure across a wide range of material systems.
\r\n
\r\nBio: Marianne Liebi studied food science at ETH Zurich, where she also completed her PhD in 2013, followed by postdoctoral research at the Paul Scherrer Institute and MAX IV Laboratory, Lund. The bar for safe decision-making rises as these systems enter safety-critical, real-world settings where they must perform well under uncertainty. Our work shows that physicality is a resource against the two kinds of uncertainty they face: intentional (or adversarial), where data is manipulated by malicious agents, and natural, where aspects of the environment are simply unknown. Most of this talk concerns intentional uncertainty. Here, one way to exploit physicality is by using communication as a sensor. Because the signals robots exchange are difficult to forge, they carry evidence that can be cross-validated to yield a quantifiable likelihood that an agent's data is trustworthy. This is the foundation of cy-trust, in which stochastic observations of trust model an agent's trustworthiness probabilistically from physical rather than cryptographic evidence. Each neighbor's contribution is then weighted by its trust value. Under this framework, we show that consensus, distributed optimization, and other core coordination tasks admit almost-sure convergence with bounded deviation from their nominal performance, even when malicious agents exceed half of a node's connectivity, past the classical Byzantine bound. We support this finding with both theory and hardware experiments under adversarial attack. Against natural uncertainty, we show that real-time sensing can be folded into rollout-based reinforcement learning, where the same machinery reweights futures rather than neighbors. We apply this idea to routing a fleet of robots to stochastically appearing demand and, with Project CETI, to the first autonomous robotic rendezvous with sperm whales at sea. Finally, we preview some of our future work combining trust with long-horizon sequential decision-making, targeting planning that stays provably resilient when the data informing the plan may itself be corrupted.
\r\n
\r\nStephanie Gil is the John L. Combining activity-dependent neuronal tagging, circuit manipulations, and brain-wide analyses, her research seeks to uncover how memories are transformed over time and how these transformations shape adaptive—and potentially maladaptive—behavior.
\r\n
", "image_description": "", "creation_date": "2026-09-18T13:21:09", "last_modification_date": "2026-09-22T14:03:25", "link_label": "Web page", "link_url": "https://veterelab.weebly.com/", "canceled": "False", "cancel_reason": "", "place_and_room": "SV 1717", "url_place_and_room": "https://plan.epfl.ch/?room==SV%201717", "url_online_room": "https://epfl.zoom.us/j/64813563657", "spoken_languages": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/spoken_languages/2/?format=api" ], "speaker": "Gisella Vetere, ESPCI, Paris, France", "organizer": "BMI SV Host: Johannes Gräff", "contact": "[email protected]", "is_internal": "False", "theme": "", "vulgarization": { "id": 2, "fr_label": "Public averti", "en_label": "Informed public" }, "registration": { "id": 3, "fr_label": "Entrée libre", "en_label": "Free" }, "keywords": "", "file": null, "icalendar_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/export/121862/", "category": { "id": 1, "code": "CONF", "fr_label": "Conférences - Séminaires", "en_label": "Conferences - Seminars", "activated": true }, "academic_calendar_category": null, "domains": [], "mementos": [ "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/1/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/6/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/9/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/19/?format=api", "https://memento.epfl.ch/api/v1/mementos/88/?format=api" ] }, { "id": 72399, "title": "Training \"Up to Speed with Zotero\"", "slug": "training-up-to-speed-with-zotero-14", "event_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/event/training-up-to-speed-with-zotero-14", "visual_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33650/200x112.jpg", "visual_large_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33650/720x405.jpg", "visual_maxsize_url": "https://memento.epfl.ch/image/33650/max-size.jpg", "lang": "en", "start_date": "2026-11-24", "end_date": "2026-11-24", "start_time": "14:00:00", "end_time": "15:30:00", "description": "
This workshop is for people who want to start using Zotero, an open source software which enables you to collect, organize and share bibliographic references. These exciting developments are accompanied by new fundamental challenges that arise regarding the safety and reliability of these increasingly complex systems due to imperfect learning, system unknowns, and uncertain environments. Statistical tools for uncertainty quantification have gained popularity due to their ability to deal with these challenges. However, their guarantees rely on i.i.d. data, an assumption that is violated when control actions change the underlying data distribution.
\r\n
\r\nIn this talk, I will provide new insight to design safe controllers under distribution shifts using robust conformal prediction (CP). I will begin by advocating for the use of CP due to its simplicity, generality, and efficiency as opposed to existing optimization-based verification techniques. I will then provide an introduction to CP and summarize existing work that uses CP to design probabilistically safe controllers in dynamic environments. Subsequently, we will look into interactive settings where the system’s behavior may change the environment's behavior, and vice versa. This circular dependency creates an interaction-driven distribution shift that invalidates existing CP guarantees. To deal with this problem, we propose an iterative framework that episodically updates the controller while robustly maintaining safety guarantees by quantifying the potential impact of a controller update on the environment's behavior. We realize this via adversarially robust CP where we perform a regular CP step in each episode using observed data under the current controller, but then transfer safety guarantees across controller updates by analytically adjusting the CP result to account for distribution shifts. Lastly, I will show how these ideas extend to handling policy-induced distribution shifts that arise when using barrier/Lyapunov functions to control uncertain systems.
\r\n
\r\nBiography:
\r\nLars Lindemann is currently an Assistant Professor for Algorithmic Systems Theory in the Automatic Control Laboratory at ETH Zürich.
