"description": "<p>The classification of gait patterns is an important challenge in movement analysis, as it supports clinical assessment and decision-making by enabling diagnosis and severity stratification. In this talk, I will discuss the potential of Topological Data Analysis (TDA) for gait pattern classification. Unlike conventional approaches that rely on explicit detection of Gait Events (GEs) to compute Spatiotemporal Gait Parameters (SGPs), TDA characterises the global structure of gait signals directly, capturing relationships and patterns in the data without requiring GEs. This is particularly relevant in real-world settings, where GE detection can be diQicult due to heterogeneity in walking conditions and gait patterns, potentially biasing clinically relevant metrics and, consequently, decision-making.<br>\r\nWithin our department, preliminary results have shown that TDA-based features can achieve classification performance comparable to that of SGPs in fall-risk assessment. These findings suggest that topology oQers a competitive alternative for representing gait data, with the potential to better handle variability across subjects and pathological<br>\r\nconditions.<br>\r\nBuilding on these results, we plan to further extend the TDA framework in two directions. First, we aim to investigate time-aware topological methods to better capture the<br>\r\ntemporal structure of gait signals. Second, we will explore Topological Deep Learning (TDL) approaches to reduce reliance on handcrafted design choices and potentially<br>\r\nimprove classification performance. By combining the robustness of topology with datadriven representation learning, this work seeks to provide robust tools for the classification of typical and pathological gait patterns.<br>\r\n </p>",

In this context, this talk will focus on recent research advances on biomass and CO2 conversion to sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), chemicals and bio-based materials. Considering the challenges associated with low-carbon resources, including dispersed distribution, significant fluctuations in raw material composition, and high conversion costs, a distributed-centralized system utilizing alcohols as key platform molecules has been proposed. Alcohol synthesis from biomass and CO2 will be presented with the focus on catalysis for methanol (thermocatalysis) and ethanol synthesis (electrocatalysis) from CO2. Conversion of alcohol to SAF will be introduced with discussions on the design of multifunctional catalysts for alcohol conversion, the dynamic evolution of catalytic sites, and the strategies for tuning product distributions. Additionally, a few examples of biobased materials, such as cellulose nanofiber-based biomaterials and bio-based nylon precursor and polyester precursor, will be presented.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nBio: Dr. Zhenglong Li is the “Qiushi” Chair Professor of Zhejiang University. "description": "<p>The growing challenges of plastic pollution, fossil resource depletion, and carbon emissions have accelerated the search for sustainable alternatives to polymers. This presentation will focus on the development of fully bio-based polycarbonates, synthesized through the polymerization of carbon dioxide with renewable epoxides. We will first detail our laboratory’s work in generating a diverse portfolio monomer from a wide range of bio-feedstocks including plant oils, terpenes, lignocellulosic biomass, and industrial byproducts. Another focus is the effect of monomer structure on resulting polymer properties and performance, and how post-polymerization modification strategies can be employed to tailor materials for specific applications. (2) Applications of bio-based polycarbonates will be then discussed in fields such as coatings, biomedical materials, adhesives, and their recycling pathways. (3) An outline of future directions will be explored, emphasizing the roles of advanced catalyst design, AI-driven manufacturing, and supportive policy frameworks to enable scalable and sustainable production. The integration of CO2 utilization with renewable feedstocks presents a compelling route toward circular and carbon–neutral materials.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nBio: Shaoqing Cui, Ph.D., is a Principal Investigator under the Zhejiang University’s \"Hundred Talents Program\" and a recipient of China’s National High-level Talent Program - (Overseas Young Talent Project). She used to be an Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville (United States) before joining Zhejiang University. Her research focuses on the valorization of agricultural waste and carbon dioxide conversion and utilization, including high-value utilization of agricultural straw, waste oils as well as  microalgae biomass. She has led and participated in multiple research projects, including a U.S. Department of Energy project on the efficient catalytic conversion of waste-treatment microalgae and CO2 into high-value plastic products, also two U.S. Department of Agriculture projects. Since joining the Zhejiang University in 2023, she has also been leading several major research initiatives, including projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Zhejiang Provincial Key R&amp;D Programs.</p>",

The behavior of waves on extremal spherically symmetric black holes and axisymmetric waves on rotational extremal black holes has seen remarkable recent developments. "description": "<div><strong>Abstract:</strong> Living tissues are communities comprised of many thousands of cells, and healing even a 1 mm skin wound is an exercise in massive crowd dynamics and swarm control. So, how can we heal faster or grow tissues better given this complexity? Our work applies principles from crowd mechanics, materials science, and swarm robotics to ‘herd’ cellular motion. Here, we will explore three stories related to this. </div>\r\n\r\n<div>First, we will discuss ‘outside-in’ tissue control where we have developed new strategies to ‘herd’ cellular motion inspired by sheepherding. Here, we use local electrical stimuli to control cellular speed and direction, enabling remote control of injury healing and tissue growth. These approaches are fundamentally limited by the engineering mechanics of crowds, and we will discuss how to develop control strategies here. </div>\r\n\r\n<div>Next, we will examine ‘inside-out’ tissue control where we hack swarm mechanics by building synthetic materials that mimic cells and integrate into living materials to control their function. In particular, we will look at our recent work using 3D nano printed ‘L’arc de triomphe’ tunnels to regulate and improve cell-material adhesion. </div>\r\n\r\n<div>Finally, we are developing a new type of living, soft actuator based on kidney tissue and collective control of water transport. Here, we use electrical cues to regulate ion transport and subsequent osmotic flux, allowing us to electrically control the hydrostatic pressure in living tissues and hydrogels, and we would especially appreciate feedback and advice here.  </div>\r\n\r\n<div> </div>\r\n\r\n<div><strong>Biography</strong>: Prof. Cohen is a joint Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Bioengineering Institute at Princeton University where he also serves as the Director of Graduate Studies for the Bioengineering Ph.D. Program. He did undergraduate training in Mechanical Engineering at Princeton University, followed by a Bioengineering Ph.D. at UC Berkeley/UCSF and a Cell Biology post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University. When he is not in the lab, he is a professional storyteller, running the LabTales Science Storytelling training workshop and performing many times each year in theaters, nightclubs, universities, and museums around the world. </div>",
