"description": "

\r\n\t
https://guelpa.ch
\r\n
",

            "description": "Abstract:\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Arsenic methylation and demethylation reactions influence arsenic speciation and fate in rice paddy soils, and understanding the balance between methylation and demethylation is important for assessing risks of arsenic toxicity in rice. Rice paddy soils are rich in organic carbon, and the conventional understanding has been that organic carbon enhances microbial arsenic methylation by fueling microbial activity. This presentation will describe a series of recent investigations — spanning pure culture to greenhouse-scale experiments — that challenge this conceptual model. First, the presentation will describe the role of carbon catabolite repression (CCR) in regulating cellular uptake and subsequent enzymatic methylation of arsenite. A combination of biosensor, gene expression, and arsenic speciation analyses demonstrate that sugars lead to CCR and a decrease in arsenic methylation, while low molecular weight organic acids do not impact arsenite uptake. The presentation will then examine couplings between methanogenesis and arsenic demethylation, wherein a greater abundance of methylotrophic carbon substrates (methanol, methylamines) promote arsenic demethylation by methanogens and limit the accumulation of methylated arsenic compounds. A genome-resolved metatranscriptomic analysis of anaerobic soil slurry experiments resolved links between methylotrophic substrate utilization and arsenic demethylation, while greenhouse experiments showed that higher levels of methanogenesis in soils were associated with lower concentrations of methylated arsenic in rice grains. Taken together, these results provide a more nuanced understanding of how utilization of distinct carbon substrates impacts arsenic methylation-demethylation dynamics, and provides mechanistic insights into how paddy soil management practices influence arsenic speciation in rice.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nBiography:\r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
Dr. Matthew Reid is an associate professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University and directs the Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Engineering Research Group. Challenging assumed architectural “normality,” the talk argues that the discipline has produced unequal spatial regimes tied to heteronormative models of living. In response to ecological and social precarity, Opera Aperta frames architecture as a living practice of repair, care, and stewardship—extending beyond buildings to communities and ecosystems.
\r\n
\r\nAnna Puigjaner (she/her) is a PhD architect and researcher, co-founder of MAIO, an architectural office based in Barcelona. Her work, linked to feminist studies, is focused on inclusive domestic architectures able to redefine former biased structures. She is currently Professor of Architecture and Care at ETH Zürich. Previously, she taught at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation GSAPP at Columbia University, at the Royal College of Arts, London, and at the Barcelona School of Architecture ETSAB/ETSAV - UPC. Anna has presented her work widely, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Venice Biennale, and the New York Museum of Modern Art. Her research project Kitchenless City was awarded the Wheelwright Price (2016) by the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nThis lecture is part of the School Lecture Series
\r\n
\r\nCOMMUNITY VOL.2
\r\nSeven exemplary projects and case studies
\r\n
\r\nCommunity is an ambivalent concept. It involves both gathering through shared customs and exclusion. Some claim that inclusive communities do not exist. Recent history shows people more often unite through exclusion than inclusion. However, communities are not sealed. Philosopher Roberto Esposito explains that community ‘is not a property or territory to defend but a void, a debt, and a gift to others’, reminding us of our otherness.
\r\n
\r\nThis lecture series explores the topic of community through architecture. How does architecture explore, define, or enable communities? Can architects collaborate directly with communities, bypassing institutional entities? How can design convey a collective experience? Seven emerging and established architectural figures respond to these questions through their work, which spans film, exhibitions, and communitarian buildings.
\r\n
\r\nSave the dates and join us on Tuesday evenings!",

            "description": "Summary
\r\nVortical structures generated by fixed or rotating lifting surfaces play a central role in many aerodynamic and hydrodynamic flows. Their stability and eventual breakdown influence wake dynamics, mixing processes, and overall flow performance. This seminar presents two recent studies exploring vortex stability and vortex breakdown.
\r\nPart I – Short-wave instability of a helical vortex
\r\nThe first part of the seminar discusses the short-wave instability of a helical vortex generated by a rotating blade. Combining experimental dye visualisations, numerical simulations, and theoretical analysis, the study identifies displacement perturbations whose wavelengths are small relative to the helix radius and pitch but may remain large compared with the vortex core size. Stability analysis based on experimentally measured vortex profiles reveals broad bands of unstable wavenumbers for several vortex bending modes. These results differ from predictions of existing theories for short-wave vortex instability. Similar instability modes are also observed in arrays of straight vortices, indicating that the phenomenon is not related to vortex curvature. A theoretical examination of the dispersion relation of Kelvin modes for the measured vortex profiles uncovers a previously unidentified family of modes associated with the specific vorticity distribution. Their non-resonant interaction through the strain field provides a plausible explanation for the experimentally observed instability features.
\r\nPart II – Two-phase wing-tip vortex breakdown
\r\nThe second part presents the discovery of a new flow feature observed in the wake of a rectangular wing in water: the breakdown of the wing-tip vortex triggered by the injection of air into the vortex core downstream of the wing. Experiments show that, for certain combinations of Reynolds number and angle of attack, a stationary air bubble becomes trapped within the vortex core at a finite distance behind the wing and can persist for several minutes even after the air injection is stopped. Under different conditions, the bubble may drift upstream or downstream, or it may disintegrate immediately. Measurements of bubble properties and vortex characteristics reveal that the breakdown behaviour depends primarily on the vortex circulation and on the axial flow component within the core. The formation of a stable breakdown bubble occurs only when a velocity excess relative to the free stream is present.
\r\nThe two studies highlight new mechanisms governing the stability and transformation of vortical flows, offering insight into the dynamics of vortex instabilities and vortex-core modifications in fluid systems.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nBiography
\r\nThomas Leweke graduated from RWTH Aachen University in Germany in 1990 with a “Diplom” (Master) in Physics. He completed his PhD in 1994 at the Université de Provence in Marseille, on the experimental study and modelling of bluff-body wakes. After a post-doctoral stay at Cornell University on vortex instabilities, he joined the IRPHE institute in Marseille in 1996 as a CNRS Researcher and became a Senior Researcher in 2007. His research focusses on the experimental study of fundamental aspects of fluid mechanics, especially in vortex dynamics and fluid-structure interactions, with relevance to applications. He was the co-organiser of a conference series on Bluff-Boddy Wakes and Vortex-Induced Vibrations (BBVIV), and an associate editor for the Journal of Fluids and Structures and the Journal of Visualization",
