A prominent rupture mode is self-healing slip pulses, which feature a finite slipping zone. The physics of slip pulses is qualitatively different from their expanding crack-like counterparts, as they involve the interplay between leading-edge contact breakage and trailing-edge re-strengthening (healing). The latter is intrinsically related to generic properties of frictional interactions at contacting interfaces, absent in ordinary fracture of bulk materials. In this talk, I will review a recently developed theory of two-dimensional slip pulses, which revealed intriguing dynamical properties of slip pulses and provided extensive predictions for their spatiotemporal evolution. The theoretical predictions are supported by large-scale numerical simulations and, more recently, by extensive laboratory experiments. Its mission is to promote writing and literary activities among students. As part of the Les Culturelles festival, Plume presents a reading of the final texts from its “Carnets d’exploration” project.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>THE PROJECT:</strong><br>\r\nStudents are invited to write a text or create an illustration on the theme of “exploration and travel,” whether real or fantastical. A jury selects six authors, who are invited to spend a weekend in the mountains to write the next chapter of the adventure. Weaving together documentary, theoretical, and fictional elements, her films and installations reflect the complexity of human relationships with their environments and foster a dialogue between science and myth to renew our perspective on the world.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nHis works have been exhibited at major contemporary art centers, institutions, and festivals around the world, including the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the IAC (Villeurbanne), the Loop Festival (Barcelona), Visions du Réel (Nyon), Wiels (Brussels), the Centre d’Art Contemporain (Geneva), the ZKM (Karlsruhe), Tokyo Wonder Site, the Museum of Modern Art (Tanzania), the Palazzo Grassi (Venice), as well as in New York, Madrid, Berlin, Zagreb, the TIFF Cinematheque (Toronto), and the Pera Museum (Istanbul).<br>\r\n<br>\r\nA two-time recipient of the Swiss Art Prize (2010, 2021) and the “Mondes Nouveaux” grant from the French Ministry of Culture (2022), her solo exhibition *Naturalis Historia* toured internationally after its opening at the Swiss Cultural Center in Paris (2017). They have largely involved equilibrium or kinetically trapped properties. By contrast, biological systems allowing multifunctional properties are characteristically dissipatively and dynamically adaptive and incorporate homeostatic feedback mechanisms to regulate the dynamic states. They also typically use signal transduction to mediate the signal from the sensory elements to the responsive sites, unlike the classic man-made stimuli responsive materials. These concept suggest avenues towards more complex life-like functions in soft matter. Herein, optically driven hydrogel systems are presented to drive homeostatically controlled thermal oscillations and to mediate signal transduction via thermal intermediate signalling (1). On the other hand, biological magnetoreception in elasmobranch organisms involves electromagnetic induction (EMI) and suggests avenues for bioinspired electrical signal transductions. We show magnetic profile recognition of translocated magnetically encoded soft matter objects using electrical intermediate signaling by EMI and decoding the magnetic information with machine learning (2). Combination of high stiffness and promoted dynamics for self-healing has turned challenging to combine. Self-healing hydrogels, still combining high tensile stiffness close to that of skin were shown by using polymers upon nanoconfinement in 2D-nanosheet layered confinements (3). Finally, we show trainable actuations in bilayer gel actuators (4). Ever more complex responses can be created, such as mimicking the Pavlovian classical conditioning (5), all paving ways for growingly life-like functions for soft robotics and interfacing with biology.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n1.
