In 2013, she transitioned to the Wellcome Genome Campus, where she became the first and, to date, the only faculty member appointed across both the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. In 2016, she was appointed as the Head of the Cellular Genetics programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute and co-founded the Human Cell Atlas initiative. From April 2024, she was appointed chair in Stem Cell Medicine at the University of Cambridge, within the Department of Medicine and the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute. Additionally, Sarah dedicates part of her time to GlaxoSmithKline and to EnsoCell Therapeutics, the startup company she co-founded. Its 10th edition, organized in collaboration with the Institute of Architecture, will be entitled <em>Autonomy and Abstraction </em>and will deal two fundamental dimensions of scholarly inquiry. The two days event, open to the public, will be structured in the form of thematic sessions alternating with keynotes and round tables.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<em>Abstraction</em> will be approached in its classical philosophical meaning, consistent with the view that understanding requires the mind to grasp the universal apart from the particulars in which it is embodied. In this sense, abstraction is the mental operation through which the essential structure of a subject is drawn out from its contingent features, allowing researchers to discern the general principles that render their object intelligible. This conceptual withdrawal does not negate the concrete but clarifies what endures beyond the variability of specific instances.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<em>Autonomy</em> will be presented as a distinct yet complementary notion: the capacity of a discipline to reflect upon itself through its own internal laws and modes of reasoning. It entails a temporary suspension of external frameworks so that the discipline may be understood from within, according to the coherence of its concepts and the logic that shapes its questions. While abstraction deals with the apprehension of universal principles, autonomy has to do with the conditions under which these principles operate within a disciplinary horizon.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nOnce defined as separate notions, abstraction and autonomy will be brought into constructive relation, for both require a measured intellectual distance that enables the essential to be articulated. In this context, participants will be invited to suspend, for a moment, the temporal and spatial dimensions that ordinarily situate their work, in order to concentrate on the internal logics that define it. <em>The possibility of abstraction and autonomy</em> will be explored not as a doctrine but as an open interpretative field through which doctoral researchers may examine their subjects at the level of foundational assumptions and operative laws.<br>\r\n<br>\r\nThese <em>Rencontres</em> will emphasise that both abstraction and autonomy admit multiple interpretations, each opening further avenues for reflection. Their plurality will form the ground of the collective discussion. Participants will therefore be encouraged not only to explore but to present the internal laws and guiding principles that structure their research, testing how their projects appear when considered CEST by Caroline Le Ster from the CEA Neurospin, Paris who will be sharing on<strong> “Leveraging the potential of UHF scanners for fMRI studies”.<br>\r\nAbstract</strong><br>\r\nThere is a growing availability of 7T scanners, with approximately 100 systems currently installed worldwide. These ultra-high-filed (UHF) scanners are particularly relevant for neuroimaging, where anatomical and functional images can be acquired with higher spatial and temporal resolution than on conventional scanners. However, UHF scanners remain difficult to operate, and understanding their specific limitations is essential. These systems indeed face several challenges arising from MR physics and biological effects that must be addressed within engineering constraints. Leverage the potential of UHF scanners, for instance through field monitoring, is therefore important to make the most of these scanners and benefit from the intrinsic SNR gain.<br>\r\nfMRI particularly benefits from the increase in magnetic field strength, enabling studies to be performed at higher resolution than at lower fields. In order to maintain reasonable acquisition times despite larger imaging matrices, several acceleration strategies have been developed, e.g. multi-slice EPI (SMS-EPI), three-dimensional EPI (3D-EPI) and non-Cartesian sampling schemes. In contrast to zero-sum games—which do not always capture conflict, even between two players—harmonic games may exhibit highly non-convex equilibrium configurations. In particular, if the game’s ambient dimension is odd, we show that the set of totally mixed Nash equilibria is a (typically non-convex) real algebraic variety of dimension at least one, which extends all the way to the boundary of the game’s strategy space. Despite the difficulties incurred by this complicated equilibrium structure, we provide an extrapolation-based variant of “follow-the-regularized-leader” (FTRL) which converges to Nash equilibrium with order-optimal regret guarantees: O(1) in self-play, and O( sqrt(T) ) against arbitrary play.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Biography</strong><br>\r\nDavide Legacci is a PhD candidate in Computer Science at Université Grenoble Alpes, CNRS and Inria, within the GHOST team, supervised by Panayotis Mertikopoulos and Bary S. His research lies at the intersection of game theory and online learning, with a focus on the geometric structure of competitive interactions and the design of no-regret learning dynamics for adversarial environments. His work has been presented at leading machine learning venues including ICML and NeurIPS. Applications could focus on strategically chosen vulnerable species, such as trees, which can support hundreds of other species, and/or critical functional groups such as pollinators or soil nutrient cycles that underpin ecosystem services.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n \r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>TA3 Modelling</strong>: Increase our current predictive capacity with respect to modelling ecosystem resilience, integration of genetic, population and ecosystem‑level data, and understanding the impacts of potential interventions.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n \r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>TA4 Data & analytics</strong>: Make results comparable across teams, trusted and legible including through delivering training, and developing shared protocols, and data visualization mechanisms. Ensure that claims made by system-focused teams are independently verified.</li>\r\n</ul>\r\n \r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>TA5 Ethics + social responsibility</strong>: Recognizing there is a diverse set of ethical considerations in the funded areas, we will not be prescriptive in what can be funded in this TA.
