"description": "1:33/1:2
\r\nOne of the most interesting public manifestations of learning in architecture are books about student‘s work. This lecture will present 1:33/1:2 new publication that showcases work by EPFL students. This book is exemplary in representing how learning architecture can be both a school reality and something that continues to inspire the architectural community at large. “About architectural tomography, about the importance of the drawing, about the book presentation 1:33/1:2, and about a special bookselling”
\r\n
\r\nSpecial book sale
\r\n1:33/1:2 will be available for purchase at a special reduced student price exclusively on the evening of the lecture. A special opportunity to discover the publication and take home a copy at student price.
\r\n
\r\nJo Taillieu
\r\nJo Taillieu is a Belgian architect and professor at EPFL / studio LIF. After early roles at leading European architecture firms, including Maxwan architects (Rotterdam, NL) and Beel-Achtergael architecten (Ghent, BE), he became project director at Stéphane Beel – Xaveer De Geyter, contributing to the design and realisation of several public and private buildings. He later co-led architecten de vylder vinck taillieu, earning international recognition, including the Silver Lion for Promising Young Participant at the 16th Biennale of Venice, before refocusing on his own practice, JTA, from 2019 onward. JTA is worldwide published and awarded.
\r\n
\r\nPart of School Lecture Series, Autumn 2026, Learning Vol.1
\r\nWe are told that learning is no longer confined to the school or the university, but it has become a continuous process that involves the totality of life. Yet in accepting this reality, we take for granted several questions that loom large within the contemporary idea of learning. In a time when technology and information are ubiquitous, does it still make sense that for learning to happen or be confined within a place? Is learning still an asymmetrical relationship where there are teachers and a student? And above all, is learning accessible, or has it become too expensive a commodity? In this lecture series, we’ll attempt to answer these questions by investigating learning on different levels such as technology, construction systems, educational spaces, and above all, making architecture. Indeed, the question that is more than anything else crucial to us is whether architecture is still a place of learning and not only of empowering those who have capital to build it. We will look at schools, drawings, robots, and measuring devices. We will ponder whether these things are only ‘tools’ to achieve a result or can still be vital places for learning.
\r\n
\r\nRecordings available on YouTube
\r\n@epflarchitectureschool
\r\n
\r\nGraphic Design
\r\nRoman Karrer & Sandi Gazic",

From the architect to the master carpenters, from the construction foreman to the head of the Pathé Group, from the sound system designer to the future projectionists, the documentary paints a vivid, human-scale portrait of this community.
\r\n
\r\nLe Chantier premiered in 2025 at the Locarno Film Festival and was released in theaters in the spring of 2026. Ultimately, it also symbolizes a world yet to be built. Following the screening, there will be a discussion with director Jean-Stéphane Bron.
\r\n---
\r\n\r\n
Jean-Stéphane Bron
\r\nJean-Stéphane Bron (born 1969 in Lausanne) is a graduate of the École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne (ECAL). His documentaries address contemporary issues such as the crisis of democracy, the economic crisis, and the rise of populism, using dramatic techniques similar to those found in fiction. Among them, *Connu de nos services* (1997) addresses the scandal surrounding the political dossiers compiled by the Federal Police in the 1970s and 1980s. *Mais im Bundeshuus / Le Génie helvétique* (2003), one of Swiss cinema’s major box-office hits, follows the work of a parliamentary commission tasked with drafting a law on genetic engineering. *The Blocher Experiment* (2013) sparked intense controversy. *Cleveland vs. Wall Street* (2010), about the subprime mortgage crisis, was presented at the Cannes Film Festival (Directors’ Fortnight) and nominated for a César Award in France. His film *The Paris Opera* (2017) was subsequently widely distributed around the world. With this film, which drew more than 200,000 viewers to theaters, Jean-Stéphane Bron won the Swiss Film Award in the Best Documentary category for the third time in 2018. In 2021, Jean-Stéphane Bron released *Cinq nouvelles du cerveau*, a feature-length film that explores various mind-boggling questions related to advances in the fields of neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Between December 2021 and May 2022, he filmed the series *Ma rue de l’Ale* for RTS on his own street in Lausanne; the series was a huge hit with audiences.
\r\n
\r\nExploring reality through the eyes of those who shape it. Jean-Stéphane Bron’s unique art lies not merely in presenting the facts, but in understanding both the people involved and the systems within which they operate—systems that shape their actions.
\r\n
\r\nPartner: Visions du réel
\r\n \r\n
\r\n\r\n
© 2026 EPFL, Laura Persat
\r\n
\r\n
",

            "description": "Collective Figurations of Baukultur
\r\n
\r\nArchitectural representation has often dissociated its production from its product, trapped in loops of identification, reproduction and mimesis which have only increased under technocapitalism. Today, our cities and environments are measured to the detail and seemingly overrepresented through proliferating digital twins, predictive models and simulations, indicators and benchmarks. These operative visualizations which reduce the world to computable data, no longer merely describe reality: they organize, mobilize, and activate matter. They function as automated, asignifying spatial infrastructures, while progressively dispensing with a symbolic mediation increasingly deemed unnecessary and, just as often, a problematic source of ambiguity.
\r\nDigital twins, predictive models and simulations, indicators and benchmarks are a constitutive part of an expanding culture of immediacy (Kornbluh, 2024), where the critique of mediation carried out by the likes of Theodor Adorno or Henri Lefebvre is resolved not through its impossible disappearance, but through its naturalization. Subsumed within the environmental interface of capital and technology (Hörl 2017), mediation is subsequently desocialized and depoliticized.
\r\nHowever, without collective figurations, there is no possibility of common horizons, and our capacity to bring about democratic and inclusive transformations of our cities and territories falters. In the SNSF project Infrastructural Baukultur, ALICE (Atelier de la Conception de l'Espace) is exploring ways to leverage the constructed nature of all representations in the co-design of our cities. As part of this project, the aim of this two-day course is to focus on the theoretical and historical frameworks of this question.
\r\nDuring the 1980s, as the cultural and literary critic Fredric Jameson developed a spatial analysis of the historical stages of capitalism, he arrived (not uncritically) at the work of MIT urban theorist Kevin Lynch, particularly The Image of the City (1960). If Lynch had suggested that urban alienation was directly proportional to the impossibility of creating an (individual) mental image of the city, Jameson went further, contending that our \"incapacity to map socially (is) as crippling to political experience as the analogous incapacity to map spatially is for urban experience.\" From there, he went on to develop the idea of cognitive mapping as an aesthetic strategy, arguing that, even when the structural coordinates of individual and social life become unrepresentable, they can still find figures and figurations through which to express themselves in allegorical, i.e. distorted and symbolic, ways.
\r\nLater on, feminist scholars Donna Haraway and Rosi Braidotti described figurations as \"materialistic mappings of situated, i.e., embedded and embodied, social positions\" (Braidotti 2011), noting that even if \"figures pertain to graphic representation and visual forms in general, (they) do not have to be representational and mimetic, (...) they do have to be tropic, performative images that can be inhabited, condensed maps of contestable worlds. (…) The chip, seed, or gene is simultaneously literal and figurative. We inhabit and are inhabited by such figures that map universes of knowledge, practice and power\" (Haraway 1997). Departing from these premises and mirroring Jameson's journey, this time back into architecture and urban design, this course seeks to construct, historically and theoretically, the concept of figuration as an allegorical and material practice capable of mapping contestable and individually inaccessible realities, a tropic and political instrument that short circuits equivalences and unsettles certainties. From there, it will encourage a critical debate around a series of interrelated questions at the core of architectural practice and academia today.
\r\nHow does design research connect with the fields of architectural history, theory and practice? What challenges are posed to collective figuration by an unrepresentable capitalism, fragmented habitats, and infrastructured perceptions? Can a critical understanding of the abstract, ideological nature of operative representations help us repoliticize urban production? Can we trace alternative genealogies of architectural, urban, and landscape representation that reveal forms of agency and collectivity capable of overcoming the traps of immediacy? Can space, both as an abstraction and as a lived, grounded experience, become a translation device within inter-, intra-, and transdisciplinary processes?
\r\nTo this end, the course will begin with an introductory session that develops a common framework by articulating, both historically and conceptually, the notion of figuration and its role within design methods, in contrast to the operational visualizations of environmentality. This framework will orient the subsequent lectures and discussions with our four invited speakers:
\r\n
\r\n• Anna Kornbluh, Professor of English at University of Illinois Chicago and author of Immediacy: Or, The Style of Too Late Capitalism (2024), will offer us a critical reflection on the political consequences of our contemporary regime of aesthetic and technological immediacy.
\r\n• Marc Schoonderbeek, Associate Professor of Architecture and Head of the Borders and Territories research group at TU Delft, will discuss the multilayered role of representation within design research strategies.
\r\n• Marina Otero Verzier, architect and researcher, leading the Data Mourning Clinic at Columbia University GSAPP, will delve into the tension between digital custodianship and the unsustainable practices of the data storage industry through the lens of Tuvalu's digital twin.
\r\n• Ignacio Farías, Professor of Urban Anthropology, Director of the Georg Simmel Center for Urban Studies and Co-Director of the Stadtlabor for Multimodal Anthropology at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, will present his ongoing work on spatial figures within urban transformation processes.
\r\n
\r\nInterested participants are invited to submit, by October 9, a short abstract (max. 300 words) outlining their approach to the subject, which will be developed into a short essay during the seminar. Assessment for the course will be based on the essay, completion of the reading assignments, and active participation in the sessions. Selected essays will be published alongside contributions from the guest lecturers in an edited volume produced as part of the SNSF project Infrastructural Baukultur.",

Yet ecological risk—pollution, fires, floods, heatwaves, droughts—is still presented as problems to be solved rather than conditions to be inhabited. This also speaks to an outsourcing of risk through externalized consequences of spatial injustice. Banks, developers, material supply chains, normative institutions, subcontracting hierarchies —all contend with calculated risk. This edition of Pressure Points asks us to unpack what it means to live with the risk, how it is managed, commodified, quantified, invented, politicized, instrumentalized, tamed, and to think, design, cohabitate intellectually and physically with it. "description": "Building for Disassembly
\r\nTemporary Sports Halls, Huts and a Hotel
\r\nGrowing student numbers and the need to renovate numerous school facilities prompted the Canton of Zurich to seek a temporary solution for sports facilities. Each building is intended to remain at a given location between three to fifteen years, until it is either relocated or stored for future reassembly. pool Architektur responded by designing a prefabricated timber construction system that enables a variety of spatial configurations and appearances, allowing for careful integration into the surrounding environment. Other projects such as the room-within-a-room installation for “El Gato Muerto” or the temporary hotel “Momentum” have evolved as a result of pool’s building for disassembly.
\r\n
\r\nThomas Friberg + Sophie Piticco, pool Architektur
\r\npool Architektur evolved from a discussion platform for debates on architecture and urban planning and began its practical work as a collective in 1998. The office and its form are understood as a work in progress with regard to an ever-changing profession. The office has won numerous competitions and is primarily active in urban planning at different scales as well as residential, infrastructure and public building construction. Over the past decades, ideas and solutions have changed, as have names and faces, because diversity and change are at the heart of pool Architektur’s identity.
\r\n
\r\nThomas Friberg studied architecture at ETH Zurich. After graduating, he worked at ETH Studio Basel, David Chipperfield Architects, joining pool in 2008. In 2018 he was admitted as a new partner.
\r\n
\r\nSophie Piticco studied architecture at EPF Lausanne and ETH Zurich. After internships in Munich and Helsinki, she joined pool Architektur after graduating in 2017. Since 2023 she is an associate at the firm.

            "description": "
“To emphasize (...) dubious uses of risk is perverse, a dirty way of talking about a
\r\nclean scientific subject”
\r\nMary Douglas, Risk and Blame, 36.
\r\n
\r\nAs the baseline condition of so many territories shaped by extractive industries, administrative delay, and climatic instability, risk is prevalent. The assembled guests should help us think and build literacy toward developing tools for living within uncertain territories and futures.
\r\n
\r\nLiam Ross
\r\nTuesday, November 3, 17:00 CET
\r\n
\r\nLiam Ross is an architect and senior lecturer in Architectural Design at the University of Edinburgh, with a focus on building standardisation as a mode of architectural design, and in particular on fire-safety regulation. The architecture of the Institute is therefore intentionally open to the city. From Porte d’Aix Square, this small campus stands out, day and night, as a welcoming presence.
\r\n
\r\nNP2F architectes
\r\nNP2F is an architecture firm founded in 2009 by François Chas, Nicolas Guérin, Fabrice Long, and Paul Maitre Devallon. Today, it brings together around twenty team members split between Marseille and Paris, and works in various cities across France and abroad. The projects NP2F engages in are both architectural and urban, and its areas of expertise include sports facilities, cultural and educational buildings, leisure and dining venues, and public space.
