Talk 2, Spring Semester 2021

20x20x20 presents a format engaging the guest professors at the EPFL School of Architecture — two 20 minute presentations by two guest professors followed by a 20 minute moderated discussion.

Guests biography

Philipp Schaerer is a visual artist and architect, specializing in the field of digital image processing. His work is at the intersection of architecture, photography and graphic design. He explores image strategies which can be abstract, model-like and exaggerated, and which are thus able to reformulate the question of the differentiation between the real and the artificial. His work has been published and exhibited repeatedly and is represented in several private and public collections – among others in The Museum of Modern Art MoMA in New York, The Centre Pompidou in Paris and the The Center for Art and Media Technology in Karlsruhe (ZKM). Philipp has been a lecturer at several universities and, from 2014-15, a visiting professor in the department of Architecture (Art et Architecture) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). Philipp Schaerer lives and works in Zurich and Steffisburg/CH.

Co-founded by Pablo Martínez and Mar Santamaria (architects and urban planners by the School of Architecture of Barcelona), 300.000 Km/s is an urbanism agency specialising in the analysis and visualisation of data for information-driven public policies and strategic planning. We have a strong background in using new forms of information (open, social and big data) to address contemporary urban and territorial challenges through diagnosis, reports, planning and participation. Advising main local authorities in Spain (Barcelona City Council and Catalan Government among others) provides cutting-edge experience in the realm of public administration and sustainable development goals. Recently, we have been awarded the Catalan urbanism Award (2020, the Spanish National Urbanism Prize (2019) and the S+T+ARTS Prize from the European Commission (2019).
