Stellarators have always constituted an important part of the fusion programme, but their properties are not well known everywhere in the plasma physics community. This talk will give a brief overview of the physics of these devices, in particular how they resemble and differ from tokamaks. The next large European fusion experiment, Wendelstein 7-X, and its goals will be presented and put in the wider context of stellarator and fusion research.
