One of the first constructions of the stable homotopy category was given by Dan Kan in 1963. We call its objects combinatorial spectra after their nature. They are similar to pointed simplicial sets, but they also have simplices in negative degrees and every simplex has infinitely many faces and degeneracies. We will show how to construct directly from a Gamma-space a combinatorial spectrum. Applying this construction to the Gamma-space associated to a symmetric monoidal category yields a combinatorial model of its algebraic K-theory spectrum.
