Event details

Date 13.07.2020
Category Call for proposal
Aim:  The AACR-The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research “Science of the Patient” (SOP) Grants Program represents a joint effort to stimulate novel research aimed at understanding the influence of the biology of the host (i.e., patient) on the genesis, development, treatment, and survivorship of cancer. Successful projects should emphasize the interplay of host physiological systems with the tumor and/or tumor microenvironment.

The proposed research must represent a highly innovative approach to a major problem or challenge in cancer research, with an emphasis on understanding the influence of the biology of the host on the genesis, development, treatment, and sequelae of cancer. Projects should contextualize cancer in the human body by studying the interplay of physiological systems (e.g., endocrine, nervous, or  systems) with the tumor and the therapies used to treat the patient. Laboratory-based investigations of all stages of the patient journey will be considered (e.g., studies examining the impact of patient physiology on cancer risk, diagnosis, prognosis, therapeutic response, adverse events, and survivorship). The funded projects are expected to catalyze important advances in the field and should have a potentially transformative impact on future clinical practice.

Funding:         USD $750’000

Duration:        3 years

Eligibility: Applicants must have a doctoral degree (including PhD, MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent) in a related field. Applications will be accepted from independent investigators who are affiliated with an academic, medical, or research institution anywhere in the world.

Applicants should be AACR members. Annual dues are not required for early-career researchers interested in Associate membership. Nonmembers interested in this grant opportunity must submit a satisfactory application for AACR membership, and be members in good standing, by the Letter of Intent deadline. Nonmembers can apply for membership using the Official Application for Membership submitted to the AACR with the required documents or apply online.

How to Apply: The first stage of the application process is submission of a Letter of Intent (LOI). The LOI is limited to two pages and must describe the proposed cancer research project, including the specific aims and rationale, significance and statement of innovation, and potential clinical impact. Relevant references must be attached and are limited to two pages. The LOI must also be accompanied by a Scientific Abstract and the Applicant's biographical sketch. LOIs will be peer-reviewed by a Scientific Review Committee; A limited number of applicants whose LOI are deemed most meritorious will be invited by the committee to submit full applications.

AACR requires applicants to submit their LOIs using the proposalCENTRAL website. If EPFL will serve as your host institution, please use the following institution name in proposalCENTRAL: Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne EPFL.

You can find more information about the application format in the Program Guidelines. Note that among the supporting documents to be included, you must enclose a signature page which requires an institutional signature. For this, please contact the Research Office.
