Dr. Clelia Righi, Institute of Nanoscience of CNR and Department of Physics Informatics and Mathematics, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy Bio : M. Clelia Righi is a researcher at the Institute of Nanoscience of CNR, Modena Italy, where she coordinates a research activity on computational tribology and tribochemistry. On the latter topic she collaborates with Total SA and Toyota Central Labs industries for the study of lubricant additives and coatings used in automotive applications. She completed her PhD in Physics at the University of Modena in 2003. Her background is in theoretical and computational condensed matter physics, with emphasis on physical and chemical phenomena occurring at surfaces. She has experience in different methodologies to study materials properties at an atomistic level over different scales. |

Tribochemistry is the study of the chemical reactions occurring between two surfaces in relative motion. These stress-assisted reactions play a central role in many frictional phenomena such as boundary lubrication, where interfacial molecules react with the contacting surfaces and modify their chemical composition with consequent modification of adhesion and resistance to sliding. This is the basic principle for the functionality of lubricant additives, which are present in motor oils, and it also explains the influence of air humidity on the frictional properties of solid lubricants, such as molybdenum disulphide, graphene/graphite, and diamond like carbon (DLC). Tribochemical reactions are complex processes difficult to monitor by experiments, so simulations can play a very important role in their understanding. In particular, ab initio simulations offer an accurate description of the chemical processes in conditions of enhanced reactivity as those imposed by mechanical stresses. I will present results that elucidate fundamental aspects in the tribochemistry of: i) phosphorus and sulfur-containing lubricant additives; ii) MoS2 and graphene solid lubricants interacting with water.
