Richard Houghten, an eminent American expert on combinatorial chemistry, will speak on the recent successes of his programme on accelerated drug discovery. Combinatorial libraries have been hyped in the past, but never by Houghten, who has spent two decades redesigning the approach to permit its being done properly. See the abstract, below, of his talk entitled ‘An Alternative Route to the Discovery of Radically New Drugs’. We tend to emphasise its last sentence. Houghten’s Torrey Pines Institute has developed a small set of multiwell plates that make it easy for potential users to evaluate the suitability of his libraries to their needs and Torrey Pines has a very vigorous external collaboration programme, now producing publications and patents, which could be extended to the Léman region.
It would be helpful if you could let us know if you would like to come. We could also set up a few private meetings on request.
Needless to say, if it suited you better, you would be very welcome the day before in Geneva (click the link, below, for details).
