Free scalar bosonic field is maybe the most basic example of a field in QFT and it has been well understood for at least 50 years from the physics perspective. And yet since 2000s it has become an intensive object of study in the probability community under the name of the (continuum) Gaussian free field. We will try to discuss two questions: what is there still to study about it? and why would you want to still study it? No guarantee that the answers would convince everyone.
