Join star archeologist Sue Alcock of Brown University for a special session on the future of Archeology.
Over the past few years leading archeologists and their colleagues from the Science have been wrestling with how archaeology — as a innately integrative discipline and as one with a high recognition factor and popular appeal — might be employed as a catalyst for other problems and possibilities.  Archeology provides an excellent example of how all manner of texts and technologies can, and indeed must, combine to investigate and interpret findings in responsible fashion. That has interesting implications for research, as well as for education, especially as we ponder potential Science, Tech, Engineering and Maths (STEM) applications at tertiary and secondary level. Moreover, Archeology has turned out as a very appealing domain to students of online courses from universities and other background.

Sue is a a classical archaeologist, with interests in the material culture of the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia, particularly in Hellenistic and Roman times. Much of her research to date has revolved around themes of landscape, imperialism, sacred space, and memory. She is currently conducting fieldwork at and around the site of Petra in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Sue’s top rated Coursera MOOC has more than 30’000 participating students worldwide. She will provide some metrics of how it worked and share reflections as to how to leverage future such opportunities to create more active 'real world' participation and contribution from the global class: either by teaching in turn, participating in online research activities, or other outreach efforts (archaeological documentation, etc.).

This is a unique opportunity to know more about the evolution of a classical discipline as it evolves in the digital era. Sue is a world-class speaker, having presented her work to multiple audiences, including at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Coffee will be served after the talk.
