Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) have become a powerful tool for underwater research. Over the last two decades the technology has matured from simple prototypes to a great variety of vehicles capable of autonomously sampling and mapping hundreds of square kilometers of ocean floor to depths of 11000 m. They now hold great promise to accelerate the exploration of "the other 70%" of earth's biosphere which today is mostly accessed conventionally through large and expensive research vessels. This talk will give an overview over the available AUV technology today and its applications. It will outline the challenges to robots in the underwater domain particularly in communication and localization/navigation and will propose a possible solution to the localization problem. We encourage everybody with a research interest in local water bodies such as lake Geneva to think about how AUV technology could benefit their current research and/or provide a possibility to address new research questions.
